I haven’t seen Ozzy impersonator Peter Marrino since I sort of bashed a show he was co-headlining in last year and I have to admit I was a little bit apprehensive about going to hang out with and shoot Unauthorized Ozzy at Sam’s Town but Bill was sitting in with the opening act so I put on my big girl pants and grabbed my camera.

Photo Diva: So Much For a Lazy Weekend

Recently I admitted to being a Fanilow but I am also a huge Prince freak (and you can take “freak” any way you like it, baby). I know…how many Barry Manilow fans also own more than 20 Prince CDs and have been up front and center of several infamous Prince after parties? (It’s OK, divas do not have to be consistent, just fabulous.) Well, I was enjoying a rare lazy Saturday and I was surfing the net for current information on Prince — the main headliner at the upcoming Roskilde Music Festival in Denmark and a big reason I am about to fly 10,000 miles to shoot a show — when I came across a local tribute band I had heard good things about called Purple Reign and thought what better way to get some practice in before shooting the Purple One than to shoot someone with all the same moves?

KRK ERGO

In the studio world, everyone faces the same challenge of referencing. All of us have spent God-knows how many hours tweaking and EQing to get our mix to sound the best it possibly can. Then you finally burn the masterpiece to a CD and put it in the car to hear it and, lo and behold, your face is melted with 4k. Or you have a wonderful 120Hz roar.

Regional Companies Expand Despite Down Market

LAS VEGAS — Many companies in a down market take the “run-for-cover” approach, resulting in cutbacks, layoffs and a virtual business standstill to weather the storm. Others, however, view the economic downturn as an opportunity to gain momentum.

Larry Hall, owner and founder of H.A.S. Productions, believes that “things happen for a reason.” For example, his music career took a fortuitous hit in 1994 after he moved his young family West to join a band.

D.A.S. Audio Shines at Star of the Desert Arena Concerts

PRIMM, Nev. -- For those southern Californians who can’t seem to wait until they reach Las Vegas’ gaming and entertainment action, there’s Primm, Nev. This small desert enclave 35 miles south of Las Vegas on I-15 at the California/Nevada state line boasts a number of properties under the Primm Valley Casino Resorts umbrella. At Buffalo Bill's Resort and Casino, the Star of the Desert Arena is where all the concert activity takes place, and recent events included performances by country artist Clay Walker and Mexican-American comedian Paul Rodriguez. For these and other events, the sound reinforcement system of choice is a four-cluster setup consisting of Aero CA-28A and Aero 48 line array elements from the D.A.S. Audio catalog.

HOMETOWN HEROES 2008
The votes have been tallied – the regional winners of the FOH Hometown Hero Awards are…
Written by David John Farinella

It is said that Las Vegas is a town that runs on something called “juice.” And most people misunderstand juice as “who you know.” Actually juice is not about who you know, it is about who knows you. And these days there are very few venues and promoters in Las Vegas that do not know HAS Productions. The HAS story seems typical on the surface, but dig a little deeper and it gets more interesting.

Aero 38A Rocks the Silverton Casino

Sound reinforcement for the group was provided by HAS Production Services and the Aero 38A, D.A.S. Audio's new self-powered linear array system. Larry Hall was in charge of the event's sound reinforcement placing four self-powered Aero 38A speakers with an additional four CA-28A self-powered speakers for front fill at each side of the stage. The smaller CA-28A speakers were flown directly below the Aero 38A enclosures using the AX-Combo support structure which allows for combined rigging and support.

Regional Slants: Getting Large Through Being Small

Being in this biz for only 10 years, I guess it's safe to say that I am a baby. All of the biggest houses in the biz have been around for an average of 30-plus years, and a recent FOH poll revealed that a very small percentage of sound hire companies' owners are under the age of 40. I just celebrated my 38th birthday.

Beale Street Music Festival

For the Cellular South Stage, Allstar Audio—with technical and logistical support from Las Vegas-based H.A.S. Productions Inc. and CEO Larry Hall—erected a massive sound system consisting of 24 D.A.S. Audio Aero 48 line array elements, 6 Aero 28A line array elements, and 16 of D.A.S. Audio’s new LX-218 subwoofers. The system was assembled with 12 Aero 48 enclosures flown for the left and right mains, with 8 D.A.S. LX-218 subwoofers per side, vertically aligned with and groundstacked directly beneath the Aero 48’s. According to Mike Borne, President of Allstar Audio Systems, “The stage was exceptionally wide, so in order to ensure adequate coverage for the front center area, we chose to groundstack the Aero 28A’s on the stage and faced them slightly inward.”

There is a part of Vegas known to its denizens, every cab driver in town and a large percentage of male tourists and convention-goes as "The Fun Zone" . Once the industrial guts that supported the glitzy Strip, as Vegas has shed its attempt at being a 'family' destination and moved ever further in the 'what happens here stays here- it's a place for adults to go and be bad' direction, the warehouses, light industrial and machine stops have been joined by a bunch of strip clubs of varying degrees of raunch, debauchery and even attempts at real class.

A “regional guy” talks about the biz and a new rig
Somehow, some way, we find ourselves in this together...
It’s Saturday, about 10 am, and I’m in Las Vegas for at least the 40th time in the past dozen years, sitting in the coffee shop of the Silverton casino following an on-time arrival (thank you Southwest Airlines!) to hook up with Larry Hall and Kevin Hill (U.S. sales manager for D.A.S. Audio.). I’ve met Kevin once prior at a trade show, and have never spoken with Larry.

Making it Happen

(Not that I know from experience, but I’ve heard…) It makes getting directions to Larry Hall’s HQ a bit more interesting.
